How we can support you
Many refuges can’t accept dogs, which can make it harder when fleeing domestic abuse. Knowing your dog is safe and being cared for leaves you free to get the support you need.
If you choose to use our service, we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. Your dog will be placed in a temporary foster home with one of our wonderful volunteers. They’ll receive all the love, care, and ear scratches they need to feel right at home until they can be reunited with you.
Free
The project is completely free, and will cover the cost of vet treatment, food, and any other bits they might need while in our care (toys, treats and comfy blankets).
Confidential
Your dog will be safe with us. We’ll never give your details to anyone, including the foster carer who’ll be looking after your pooch. We’ll also foster them a safe distance from where you’re fleeing from.
Expert team
We are highly experienced in supporting people and their pets fleeing domestic abuse. We’ll be understanding of your situation and will talk through all options with you.
Support
We know how difficult it is to be away from your dog. That’s why we’ll keep you up to date with regular updates and photos so you can see how they’re getting on.

How to refer your dog
Referring your dog to the Freedom Project is simple and confidential.

Gemma’s story
After experiencing domestic abuse for 3 years, Gemma bravely made the decision to leave her ex-partner. The only problem was she couldn’t face leaving her beloved Dusty behind. Luckily, our Freedom Project was there to help.
Gemma says,
“I eventually managed to flee to a refuge with my son, but they couldn’t take Dusty in too. That’s when I heard about the Freedom Project. They were fantastic, and within 24 hours they had found Dusty a foster home.”
While in our care, Dusty enjoyed many trips to the beach with his loving foster carers, and we updated Gemma regularly with photos and updates. We’re so thrilled to say that they’re now reunited and ready to move forward with their journey, together.
