Frequently Asked Questions

On average, dogs stay on the Freedom Project between 6-9 months, however this can sometimes be a lot shorter or slightly longer.   

Unfortunately, foster dogs aren’t able to be taken abroad. However, they might be able to go to dog friendly places in the UK.  
This would need to be discussed with the Freedom team and would depend on the dog’s temperament, and any other factors that might impact their ability to travel.  
We completely understand that our foster carers need a well-deserved holiday, so if your foster dog is unable to go with you, we’ll organise another temporary foster home for them while you’re away.  

We’ll provide everything you need for the dog, including food, bedding, collars, leads, treats, toys etc.  

Fostering with us won't cost you a penny.  
We’ll cover the cost of any approved treatment the dog might need including vaccinations, flea and worm, and any specific medications recommended by your vet. 

Some dogs will already be neutered, but some may need to be neutered at your local vet once they’re settled. We’ll be there to assist every step of the way.  
 

Absolutely. Our experienced team are here to support all foster carers and their dogs throughout the entire foster placement. 

We ask every carer to give the dog time and patience when they first take them into their home, but we’re on hand to assist throughout. This includes an out-of-hours emergency phone number just for our volunteers. However, we do understand that sometimes things don’t quite go to plan. If needed, we’ll collect the dog and move them to another foster home.  

We’re always on hand for our volunteers. We have an emergency out-of-hours number that you can call at any time. 

Each foster dog is individually matched to a foster home, so we can find the best possible foster carer and home for that specific dog.  
Sometimes, it can take a lot longer to be matched with a foster dog. Particularly if you have children or other pets in the home.  

Our ultimate aim is to return all dogs to their owners. A small number of dogs may not be able to be reunited and may need to find a permanent home through Dogs Trust.
